Caring for Crabs
When you go crabbing and catch some crabs please look after them.
Always remember:-
Keep them in seawater - never use freshwater
Change the water regularly
Do not put too many crabs in one bucket
Keep your crab bucket in the shade
Make sure you release them so that they can go home

- How do you go crabbing with kids?
- Tie a line with a small weight and a net or bait bag, lower it off a harbour wall or pontoon, wait a minute or two, then gently lift. A bucket of fresh seawater keeps your catch happy while you count them.
- What do you need for crabbing?
- A crab line or drop net, some bait such as bacon or fish scraps, a bucket of seawater, and a little patience. Our crabbing kits have everything a family needs to get started.
- How do you look after the crabs you catch?
- Keep just a few in a bucket of cool seawater out of the sun, add a stone or some seaweed for shelter, and always tip them gently back into the water where you found them before you leave.
- Is crabbing safe for children?
- Yes, with care. Choose a calm harbour wall or pontoon away from deep water, keep little ones within arm's reach, watch the tide, and wash hands afterwards.
